Introduction
This page tries to capture information about all the families that descended
from one particular Goodworth family in Whitgift, just to the north-west of the
Isle of Axholme on the estuary that divides Yorkshire from Lincolnshire. There's
more to come, particularly for the period c. 1850-1900.
William GOODWORTH appears to move to the Thorne area from Whitgift, leaving
the older members of his family in the Whitgift area and taking the younger
one(s) with him. The land registry info (found Oct 2002) seems to confirm that
he actually moved to Hatfield Woodhouse or perhaps even originated there. Now
I've managed to look at the original Bishop's Transcript for Hatfield it's clear
that John Goodworth and Susan Womock had a son William ("Guill." in the
transcript) baptised 18 Feb 1700 in Hatfield. William's
son John appears to have settled in Hatfield Woodhouse, had several children in
the Hatfield area, then moved to Howden with some of his children following the
death of his wife Mary Dawson. The evidence of the Hatfield parish registers is
simply that Samuel, John's last son, is the son of John, cordwainer of Woodhouse
(son of William, cordwainer of Thorne).
Meanwhile, John's brother William, who married in Whitgift, has children
whose families also at least pass through up in the Howden/Goole area. I've
speculated on the Barnsley pages that William's son William ends up miles away
in the Barnsley area. There are several cases where I simply cannot tell which
of two Williams, Johns etc. was descended from which line.
As already noted on the Hatfield/Thorne page, it now seems almost certain
that William was also a son of John Goodworth and Susan Womock in Hatfield,
baptised there in 1700.
Dates and references from the England and Wales Civil Registration indexes
(which I've also looked up in Leeds) are in the format

William GOODWORTH
(Guess) c. 18 Feb 1700, Hatfield, son of John GOODWORTH and Susan WOMOCK
West Yorkshire Land Registry: 23 Jul 1750 "9 in the
forenoon":" William Goodworth of Hatfield Woodhouse in the
county of York yeoman and Dorothy his Wife one of the daughters of Joseph
Reynolds late of Reedness" transfers land to John Egreman of Redness:
"One acre and three roods of land lying in Redness fields".
Witnesses Thomas Simpson and John Simpson. This appears to be the
earliest West Riding of Yorkshire land transaction that mentions a
Goodworth but since the index is by seller there could be more in there.
1778: "of Thorne" (in baptism record for grandson Samuel)

Esquire
- three living sons, John, William, George
- grandson Robert by late son Robert
- four daughters

I cannot find any evidence that this couple had children.
It looks as if William LAMB died in 1867 aged 79, leaving a valuable
freehold property in the marketplace in Howden which was the subject of a
case in the High Court of Chancery (William Lamb, deceased, and Green v.
Goodworth). Judging from the item in the Times of 08 Jul 1871 about it and
various other bits of info. I conjecture that there was probably a dispute
between the descendants of Robert GREEN and Sarah GOODWORTH and some other
branch of the family, but I do not know which one. |

It is possible that George GREEN marries Jane ? and has at least 3 children:
Henry GREEN, b. about 1844
