Introduction

This page tries to capture the various pieces of information I have on Goodworths in the U.S.A., including U.S. census info. up to 1930.

At the moment it only covers the families who were in Pittsburgh or Ohio around 1900, not e.g. the Utah families or the descendants of Richard Goodworth in Massachusetts & California. The GOODWORTH Allegheny/Pittsburgh families seem mainly to have stayed in PA or migrated to Florida and Ohio. As usual, trying to trace what happened to the women tends to be a little harder...

There's obviously quite a lot of guesswork here, and any help in sorting this info. out would be appreciated.

Anyone trying to use the (in my opinion excellent) search facilities on Ancestry.com, particularly the US 1920/1930 census searches, please note the various comments I have posted there - as far as I can see, in the vast majority of cases, if the people indexed under "GOODWORTH" in the 1920/1930 census returns are not here, it is probably because when I looked at the census images, the names looked more like Woodworth, Goodsmith, Goldsmith, Goodwright, and so on. But don't let that stop you looking for yourselves - when you see the nearest thing to the originals you can get without actually looking at the originals, it's easy to see why it is so hard to transcribe these entries correctly. If you disagree, please (a) get in touch and (b) post your own note via Ancestry!

The very best data appears to be for the 1900 census, which list month and year of birth rather than just age, number of years married, and for married women, number of children and number of children still living.

Descendants of John & Elizabeth GOODWORTH from Leeds, England

This is an extended copy of relevant information from the Leeds page. John was a clothier in Wortley. He and his wife emigrated at some point (probably in the 1840s) to join their son(s) in the USA. They were living in Ward 3, Pittsburgh in the 1850 census, where John is described as 74 years old, cloth mft. entrepreneur, merchant. Elizabeth is also aged 74.

The two sons who appear to have emigrated before them were James and Benjamin.

7. James GOODWORTH? The Marriage record says he is from Wortley but perhaps he originated somewhere else
Clothier
Could this also be the James GOODWORTH who travelled to the US aged 35 in 1847 on the "Liberty" (Arriving 26 Nov 1847? Guessing that it is, and that Sarah travelled separately on the "Isaac Wright" in 1849 with her children, and putting this together with various Civil Registration Births in Leeds, suggests the various conclusions in italics

Can't work out how this Joseph relates to the above. If the 1850 Joseph is a son of Benjamin, this Joseph is more likely to be a son of James. But I am wondering whether the Joseph shown as Charles' brother in the 1880 census as aged 30 is actually just 13 (i.e. the census enumerator misheard). Then everything would fit except for the absence of both Charles and Joseph from the 1870 census.
