Here's a list of more or less everything I know so far about Goodworths
in London and the southern part of England (almost entirely the "south east"). It's really just an outline - based primarily on 1881
census information and Civil Registration indexes. You will find more detailed
christening information on IGI, but I would prefer to check the originals (i.e.
microfilm) before posting details here. All locations are in London, England, unless stated otherwise.
Information
(marked * ) was kindly provided by a relative of Frederick George Augustus GOODWORTH
& in some cases double-checked by me
- please contact me if you are related to his branch of the family and wish to
get in touch.
Dates and references from the England and Wales Civil Registration indexes
(which I've also looked up in Leeds) are in the format
bmd Mmm year Placename Volume Page,
e.g.
bmd Dec 1888 Leeds 1b 456
A few years ago it seemed to me that the Goodworths in the London area were
completely separate from the ones in Yorkshire, at least from some time in the
1600s. A number of "Goodworth" names could be found on the IGI in London
(particularly Marylebone) around 1700, and there were later ones in various
areas. Then it became clear that
a. One of the Thomas GOODWORTHs in London in the late 1700s was the son of
Thomas GOODWORTH or Thorne in Yorkshire
b. George GOODWORTH (b. about 1785) was the son of William GOODWORTH of
Asselby (near Howden in Yorkshire.
c. several branches of the Howden/Selby/Goole family (mainly mariners)
moved to London in the middle of the 1800s
and so on.
The only branch that it not obviously connected is the first branch I've
liste don this page, but it now seems reasonable to speculate that this Robert
GOODWORTH was actually the son of Thomas GOODWORTH of Thorne, b. 1740. It all
fits. But at the moment, it is just speculation. If the guess is correct then
after about 1700 there are at most 2 Goodworth families in England: The one that
originates in Hatfield, and the one that pops up in Leeds in the late 1700s. I
have yet to find any link between those two families, but I now find it
increasingly difficult to believe that no link exists.
These are my current guesses for the Robert family, but I have no proof that
the same Robert married three times.

A Thomas Goodworth from the Hatfield/Thorne area in Yorkshire is recorded as
being an apprentice in London in the 1760s suggesting that there could have been
a family link at that time, and a Thomas Goodworth marriage is recorded in the
late 1700s, followed by a couple of Christenings of Richard Christopher
Goodworth (who turns up in Hatfield later) and Anne Mary Goodworth (who dies in
1873). But I have no further information on Thomas' origin - perhaps the son of
John Goodworth and Mary Dawson? - or other children - perhaps Robert? Sarah?
Locating the appropriate death/burial info. for this Thomas/Elizabeth might
help. The fact that Anne Mary stays in London suggests that Thomas and Elizabeth
may have stayed there too.

The other member of the household listed in the 1881 census is
George GOODWORTH, b. about 1811, Howden Dyke, Yorkshire, Former Master Mariner, Father
of George GOODWORTH (5). George was almost certainly the son of
William GOODWORTH and Hannah SAGAR who had their children in the Howden area from 1798
to 1817. I
believe George and his elder brother John married two sisters, Hannah and Ann
Eccles respectively, as they both had children called Freeman GOODWORTH named
after Hannah/Ann's mother Hannah Freeman. It is also possible that this William
GOODWORTH was the son of John GOODWORTH and Mary Dawson of Hatfield.
That finishes the list of most of the London area GOODWORTHs mentioned in the
1881 census, but there are still quite a few mysteries.
A. Up to 1811 when George Goodworth marries Elizabeth Davey there are just
occasional glimpses of Goodworths in the Greater London area (see Robert's
family at the top of this page). There seem to be
individual survivors from the 18th century into the 19th century, but no obvious
connection between George (m. 1811) and the past. It does now look as if George
was George GOODWORTH c. 1785
Howden, son of William GOODWORTH and Ann Cambridge (?). I have little info on
the fate of this George's siblings, but the names of George and Elizabeth's
children fit quite well.
B. There's at least one other family in London in the mid-1800s, but they
have mostly died or moved (apparently to Barnsley) by 1881. I have now
managed to look at the 1851 census pages which tell us that Robert was born in
Hull and Elizabeth in Barnsley. Robert is almost certainly the son of Robert &
grandson of Ann GOODWORTH of Asselby mentioned in her will. From the marriage index it is clear
that Elizabeth was a GOODWORTH prior to marriage (but perhaps not nee GOODWORTH). Elizabeth Goodworth moved back to Barnsley and
married Joseph Rodgers in 1860, as she is listed as a "Boarder" in her daughter
Isabella's house in the 1881 census.
