These are the Goodworths who originated or lived in Leeds, Yorkshire,
England, up to around 1900. There is rather more guesswork than I would like,
and still quite a bit of work to to do.
It seems as if one family in Leeds was responsible for a large number of
descendants in Australia and quite a few descendants in the U.S.A. There is much
more information on the Australian branch at
http://users.hunterlink.net.au/~ddkjk/goodworth1.htm
so I only propose to list the events that occurred in England on this page.
One family seems to have been responsible for most if not all the Goodworths
in Leeds from the late 1700s to the late 1800s. But at least three branches of
that family emigrated to Australia and the U.S.A. in the 1840, and the rest were
thinning out for the rest of the century.
It looks as if almost all the people
called Goodworth in Leeds in 1900 were from elsewhere - one family from
Barnsley, and one or two other people. Later, there may have been some people in
the area from the West Clayton branch and the Wetherby/Thorp Arch branch of the
Hatfield/Thorne family. However, as usual, the female lines are
harder to trace and there is more to do. My grandmother Elisabeth Goodworth, from Winterton, married in 1906 and
lived in Leeds from then until she died in 1936.
A significant confusion is that quite a lot of the Goodworths in Leeds came
from or lived in Wortley, which is now a suburb to the south (and slightly west,
I think) of the city centre of Leeds. But the General Register Office
registration district "Wortley" is a completely different area covering High
Hoyland, Penistone etc. to the north west of the Barnsley area where at least
two other groups of Goodworths were located.
Dates and references from the England and Wales Civil Registration indexes
(which I've also looked up in Leeds) are in the format
bmd Mmm year Placename Volume Page,
e.g.
bmd Dec 1888 Leeds 1b 456
Sometimes the references in these indexes are hard to read so please do not
rely on them if you use them to order copies of the original records.
Thomas GOODWORTH
d. before 08 Jun 1783, but no other record. No other Goodworths seem to be
recorded in the Wortley or Leeds area before that.) If this Goodworth came
from elsewhere, the only obvious candidate is that it is the
Thomas Goodworth c. 09 Jan 1746 in Thorne, near Doncaster, son of Thomas Goodworth.,
but I think he went to London and stayed there. |
m. 16 Oct 1774
(St Peter, Leeds. The precise date comes from the Bishop's transcripts in
the Borthwick in York.
I have finally managed to check the details of this marriage. The names are
clearly written as Thomas Goodworth (so it's either the correct name or the
transcriber has made a serious error) and Elisabeth Lee. Unfortunately there
is no other information at all. However, on the very same day Samuel LEE
marries Grace HARTLEY. Could these LEEs be related? Brother and sister? If
so, I can't find an obvious family... |
Elisabeth LEE
No other records yet found. Most likely candidate c. 11 Aug 1754 Hunslet,

|
| ?. |
Thomas GOODWORTH

It seems likely that there were
other children between 1774 and 1783, but if so I have yet to find any
record of them. In particular the John Goodworth who marries Elisabeth
Wilcocks in 1797 is in the right age range to be one of Thomas's children.

John GOODWORTH
Clothier.
Three Goodworths (2 Johns and a Thomas) are mentioned in the Poor Law Rate
Book in 1833 as paying rates under the Poor Law. Assuming there were no
other Goodworth families in Leeds at that time that means that this John
Goodworth must have been alive in 1833:
One John Goodworth lived (or had property) at/on "Green Top" and paid 5
shillings on Sep 4
One John Goodworth had property at "South side of Wortley Moor & Wind Mill"
and paid six and threepence on Jul 24
Thomas Goodworth had property at "Low Close and Old Field Lane Top" and paid
four and eightpence-ha'penny on Aug 18.
1850: Pittsburgh, PA, USA, aged 74, Cloth manufact. (He is listed as from PA
but in fact the census enumerator has clearly made a mistake and recorded
the country on the line below for everyone below him on the page (page 149),
so the correct origin is England. (I don't know if it is possible to work
out where they were (all the page has is a dwelling house sequence number
and a family sequence number).

There is also a burial record for a Thomas. I have 08 Feb 1801 written down,
which is fishy as it is the same date as Elisabeth's birth. If so, Thomas
was almost certainly born early in the marriage, or perhaps even before.

Thomas Goodworth had property at "Low Close and Old Field Lane Top" and paid
four and eightpence-ha'penny on Aug 18.
