The Goodworths were connected to an interesting family, the Lamploughs, by
marriage.
If you are interested in the Lamploughs/Lamplughs (and other variants of that
name, please contact Linda Theriault (DESPAM the e-mail address at
theriault6@KILLMAPSadelphia.net , Lin Duke (DESPAM
adnilekud@MAPSKILLaol.com or contact me using
the address on the home page of this site), as they have gathered a lot of
Lampl(o)ugh-related information include much of the information on this page. Linda discovered the link between
Benjamin and the other Lamplough families in East Yorkshire, among other things.
William Henry GOODWORTH 1808-1874 married Rosetta BIRCH, who was the
daughter of James BIRCH 1729-1829 and Sarah ADDY 1792-1826. James and Sarah had
at least 10 children. only 3 survived to adulthood as far as I can tell: Hannah
BIRCH 1814-1884, James BIRCH 1817-1863, and Rosetta BIRCH 1818-1898.
Hannah BIRCH and Benjamin LAMPLOUGH 1810-1880, a draper from Bridlington
Quay, were married in Derby. Benjamin's parents were Benjamin LAMPLOUGH and Barbara Ogle WILLIAMSON 1771-1837. Although I have a little bit
more information on Barbara, so far I have been unable to find out who
Benjamin's parents were. However, it seems likely that they lived in the East
Riding of Yorkshire as there were a number of LAMPLOUGH/LAMPLUGH families in the
area at the time.
Benjamin and Barbara had at least 3 sons and 2 daughters.
As far as I can tell, one daughter stayed at home, and one married and moved
to Sheffield, not necessarily in that order. I know little about her family
except info. available from the England Census returns.
The three sons were
Williamson LAMPLOUGH 1802-1877, Benjamin LAMPLOUGH 1810-1880, and Henry
LAMPLOUGH 1813-1894.
Williamson moved to London and started a successful shipbroking/insurance business. He and his family were also prominent in the
Wesleyan/Methodist movement. Williamson was also a founder
member of the British and Foreign Bible Society.
At least some of Benjamin and
Hannah's family were also involved in Methodism, notably Lucy LAMPLOUGH and
perhaps (I am not sure) Barbara LAMPLOUGH. What's more, these are by no means
the only LAMPLOUGHs involved in this branch of the Church. So far I have not
come across a book about the Lamploughs but I expect it might say that someone
in the family was a Wesleyan in the 18th century when it was still part of the
Church of England.
In contrast, Henry went in another direction, inventing a
well-known (and rather dodgy-sounding) all-purpose "health potion" called Lamplough's Pyretic Saline.
II'm now starting to flesh out Benjamin's branch of the family with an
extract of the info. gathered by Linda, Lin and myself. It's a bit difficult to
know where to start because at the moment I'd rather stick mainly to detailing
the "descendants of the Benjamin Lamplough (b. about 1775) I first started
with". I've provided some info. on Benjamin's parents and grapndparents, but for
more you'll probably be better off contacting Linda and/or Lin.
