I have now divided the Goodworth families that were in the Barnsley area onto
two pages:
This page has info. on the families that were in West Clayton
from around 1840 - these all appear to be descendants of one of the Thomas
Goodworths from the Hatfield area.
The Barnsley page
has info. on all the other families that were in Barnsley from the beginning of
the 1800s, primarily descendants of William Goodworth, weaver and his wife Mary,
and another family that moved (back?) from London.
Some of this page is an outline based primarily on 1851 and 1881
census information and Civil Registration indexes. Much of the information on
the George Goodworth/Ann Lyles line has been confirmed/provided/corrected by
descendants of Fred Goodworth. All locations are in the
West Riding of Yorkshire (WRY), England, unless stated otherwise.
Dates and references from the England and Wales Civil Registration indexes
(which I've also looked up in Leeds) are in the format
bmd Mmm year Placename Volume Page,
e.g.
bmd Dec 1888 Leeds 1b 456
Thomas was the son of William GOODWORTH 1769-1850 and Mary MOTE 1771-1839
A significant confusion is that a number of births etc. were registered in "Wortley",
which is an area to the North-west of Barnsley and nothing to do with the
Wortley district just South of Leeds where a number of Goodworths also
originated.
