I found a copy of William Goodworth's will at the Borthwick Institute in York. It was either recorded there or proved on 21 Oct 1843. I only include a summary of the main details and names here, but will add a rough copy of the diagram of William's property on the corner of New Street and John Street when I can. Unfortunately the will does not contain any info. on William's origins. It describes him as "of Barnsley", a linen weaver, with friends Samuel COWARD of Swithin, Darton and George HURST of Barnsley. William's property consisted of a block of houses, shops, workshops and land on the corner of John Street and New Street. On the corner of the two roads was a house occupied by William, with a kitchen and perhaps a weaver's shop. Next to that along New Street was a meat shop, then a house and kitchen occupied by David PALMER and used as a Barber's shop. On John Street there was a House and weaver's shop with looms, occupied by George MALLINDER, and a house and shop occupied by George ARMLEY. There's a lane called Occupation Road at the back of the latter two houses, and two parcels of land (I think) in the corner of the block opposite to the house occupied by William. I would say the entire block occupied around 20 metres by 15 metres. As far as I can tell, William leaves all the property in New Street - the dwelling house, kitchen and weaver's shop, meat shop and chambers - to his son William, plus £1000. He leaves George MALLINDER's house, shop and looms to his son Robert, and George ARMLEY's part to his son John. William also gets half of the land at the back, and John and Robert get a quarter each. There may be some money for John and Robert as well but I haven't recorded it. All the property and money is basically left in trust until William's wife dies. William also leaves £50 to each of his daughters Hannah, Sarah and Betsy, and £20 each to his two grandchildren Ann WHOAKES and William WHOAKES. He doesn't mention any daughter called Mary. Witnesses are Wm. SHEPHERD, Geo. RYSDALE, and John TRAVISS. |
