I have now divided the Goodworth families that were in the Barnsley area onto
two pages:
The (West) Clayton
page has info. on the families that were in West Clayton from around 1840 -
these all appear to be descendants of one of the Thomas Goodworths from the
Hatfield area.
This page has info. on all the other families that were in
Barnsley from the beginning of the 1800s, primarily descendants of William
Goodworth, weaver and his wife Mary, and another family that moved back from
London.
Dates and references from the England and Wales Civil Registration indexes
(which I've also looked up in Leeds) are in the format
bmd Mmm year Placename Volume Page,
e.g.
bmd Dec 1888 Leeds 1b 456
All the GOODWORTHs in Barnsley in the 1851 census transcription I have seen
(except Hester) are recorded as born in Barnsley.
However, I now (Nov. 2004) have a copy of the the entry for Robert in the 1851
census and it does look like "Barmby" Marriages of Hannah, Ann, Sarah and John Goodworth are recorded in the 1820s and
1830s in Silkstone, just to the west of Barnsley. I have yet to check these. I
have not yet followed up Silkstone in the 1851 census, but given the ages...
Conjecture 1 is that these three women, William, Robert and John all came
from the same family.
Conjecture 2 is that it is the family of the William Goodworth
who married Mary Appleby in Howden in 1796.
Evidence for:
They have three children William (c.
1797), Hannah (c. 1798), Robert (c. 1800), all christened in Barmby-on-the-Marsh.
Is it also possible that the 1851 census or a transcriber has written Barnsley
as their origin rather than Barmby?
There doesn't seem to be any sign of this William, Mary, William, Hannah or
Robert in the Howden area (or anywhere else) after 1800.
Deaths of a William and a Mary are recorded
in Ecclesfield in 1842 and 1845 respectively.
Evidence against:
It's sheer speculation on my part
Different area
The lack of any record of a child named Mary born in the late 1700s. However,
there does appear to be a later Mary.
But once we've made that speculation, the candidates for the William who
marries Mary Appleby are:
- William c. 1769, son of William Goodworth c. Whitgift 1737 and Ann
Cambridge (my preference, as the childrens' names fit well, and William (the
elder) is recorded as "of Asselby" at the baptisms of two of his daughters
in Howden, and Asselby is the next village to Barmby-on-the-Marsh).
- William c. 1769
Hatfield, son of William Goodworth and Mary Singleton. However, I am pretty sure
that this family never left the area near Hatfield and that WiIlliam died in
Braithwaite in 1850
- William c. 1776
Hatfield, son of John Goodworth and Mary Dawson.
I now have the death certificates for William and Mary - William's age (74)
rules out option (3) even if it is only nearly correct, and if it is accurate
also rules out option (2), and agrees with option (1).
Anyone with anything to add, for or against, please
let me know!
